Do you run a Beauty Salon or Clinic and want to make it more successful? Perhaps you have all the basics in place, with clients coming through the door but you’re not actually making any profit?
I have set up a chain of successful salons and am writing this to help you make the next step. Here are 3 of the most popular pieces of equipment I use which have helped turn my salons into profitable businesses.
I’m not suggesting you go out and invest in all of them at once though! If you don’t currently offer any machine based treatments you need to carefully consider which would fit best in your Salon. If you want help with that then get in touch with me!
1. Laser Hair Removal
This is undoubtedly one of the best investments any salon owner can make. If you have women coming through the door every day, then it’s a no brainer. In fact if you don’t offer Laser hair removal, you’re probably losing out to another salon or clinic who is. It’s one of the most in-demand treatments out there.
Good laser machines no longer have to cost the earth. There are great machines out there which are just as good as the top-of-the-range models, and get the same results, but you won’t be sweating over the repayments. If you don’t overpay for your machine and you get it right, you should should be making a profit in the first or second month.
You really need to work out the numbers. The more you pay for your machine, the more pressure on you to make money to cover the cost of the repayments. (Unless of course you already have a thriving business with no shortage of high paying clients) However if you choose a professional laser hair removal device which is affordable and does the job, then you can really hit the ground running.
Typical Salon Example:
- Machine cost £400-£500 per month (on finance repayment)
- You generate £2,000-£2,500 in laser hair removal treatments from month 2 or 3
- Factor in staff costs, consumables and overheads and you are still making over £1,500 profit every month.
- That figure can easily increase to over £3,000 per month if you market the treatment well.
2. Radiofrequency Skin Tightening
This brilliant treatment is easy to carry out, inexpensive to offer and yet can bring you a lot of extra revenue.
Most women and men from the age of 30 upwards can benefit from Radiofrequency skin tightening. Plus once you have the machine there are no extra ongoing costs. What I mean by that is, there’s no needles to buy, no filters, no flash lamps to replace. These machines are very robust and need very little maintenance.
Other than the machine you only need one product – Glycerine – to deliver the treatment. This makes it very cost effective and profitable.
You can carry out this treatment on many areas such as full face or neck. Or you can pinpoint areas of concern such as around the eyes, jawline /lower face and also body areas with loose skin, such as the stomach and upper arms (bingo wings).
It’s also a great treatment to add into existing facials you offer – to make them a deluxe anti-ageing treatment.
Typical Salon Example:
- Machine costs £1,500-£3,000 to purchase.
- Treatment on lower face & jawline – you charge £80 per session.
- Carry out just 3 x treatments per week = 3 x £80 = £240
- In approx 2 months you will have paid for the machine, which makes anything after that almost pure profit.
3. Plasma or Advanced Electrolysis.
Both these technologies are advanced pieces of equipment which can set you apart from other Salons. They will enable you (with good training) to remove growths, lumps and bumps from clients. Things like skin tags, milia, sebaceous hyperplasia and keratoses. Most Salon owners don’t offer these treatments and don’t know anything about removing lesions.
If you want to offer something really specialised then then either of these devices can do that. They’re also not hugely expensive to invest in, but you do need to be well trained. More people want laser hair removal than a skin tag removing – however if you become known as the go-to place for blemish removal then it’s a great treatment. Plus it’s very lucrative if you get enough clients through the door.
Typical Salon Example
- Plasma or Advanced Electrolysis Device including good training – costs approx £2,000.
- Single treatment to remove a cluster of skin tags or milia – you charge £100 per session (you might even charge more)
- Carry out just 2 x treatments per week = 2 x £100 = £200
- You require single-use disposable needles for these treatments. After use, needles are to be disposed in a sharps box (you will need a contract to get this emptied)
- The needles cost from £1-£10 each depending on the device.
- In little over 10 weeks you will have paid for the device, even factoring in the needles.
If you were to ask me to extend this list to 5 treatments, then next I would add in IPL for skin rejuvenation (not for hair removal), Microneedling or Radiofrequency Microneedling and then probably a body contouring or fat reduction device.
Your next step as a Salon Owner however very much depends on where you are now. You need to look at what you currently offer, who your clients are and where you want to go with your business.
